(CNN) — A senior al Qaeda member, Ibrahim al-Banna, was killed in a drone attack in southern Yemen late Friday night, the country’s defense ministry said.

The ministry added that al-Banna was the head media officer for the terrorist group al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

Al Banna was one of at least three people killed in multiple drone strikes in the Azzan and Shaba areas of southern Yemen. The attacks took place during a gathering of alleged militants, the ministry said.

On September 30, a U.S. drone strike killed a key leader of AQAP — the U.S.-born miltant cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.
