(CNN) — Police reported fatalities early Saturday after a massive traffic pileup left 35 people injured in southwest Britain.

“Some have tragically lost their lives,” the Somerset police said in a statement.

The exact number of people killed in the 27-vehicle accident Friday night was not immediately available. It involved multiple vehicles, including cars, vans and trucks. At least four of the cars caught fire.

Fire officials had said earlier that at least 10 of the injuries were life-threatening.

The crash occurred about 8:25 p.m. Friday on the M5 highway in Somerset, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of Bristol, according to the Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue.

Rescuers used special equipment to free four people trapped in their vehicles, the fire department said.

About 15 fire trucks responded to the scene.

Parts of the road are expected to stay closed for the next 24 hours, fire officials said.

CNN’s Nicky Robertson contributed to this report.
