(CNN) — From a 2-0 defeat at Oxford United on November 6, 1986 to a English Premier League coronation party through the streets of Manchester on May 13.

Alex Ferguson’s 26-year reign at Manchester United has seen the club transformed from a sleeping giant to a relentless, trophy-winning juggernaut in both the football arena and the sports business world.

Following Wednesday’s announcement that the Scot, the most successful coach in English football history, will end his Old Trafford tenure, CNN marks seven moments which have defined Ferguson’s career.

Sacked by St Mirren

Ferguson’s managerial career has been littered with glorious highs, but it has not been without its lows, none more so than in 1978 when Ferguson was in charge of Scottish team St Mirren.

Ferguson’s retirement ‘a sad day’

Alex Ferguson’s football legacy

He oversaw a remarkable upturn in St MIrren’s fortunes which saw the unheralded club win the second-tier of Scottish football in 1977 with a squad which bore classic hallmarks of a Ferguson team, notably his faith in young players. That St Mirren side had an average age of just 19.

But he was unceremoniously sacked by then St Mirren chairman Willie Todd for what he described as “breaches of contract” relating to the manager’s decision to join Aberdeen.

”I regret the fact Alex did not stay longer at St Mirren and I regret the circumstances of his departure, but I still believe that the club had no alternative,” Todd told Scottish newspaper the Herald in May 1999.

“There were no grudges. I’ve met him several times at football matches since then and our relationship is quite amicable.”

Aberdeen roll over Real Madrid

Ferguson was finally appointed as Aberdeen manager in June 1978 and unprecedented success followed for the Scottish club.

FA Cup: 1990, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2004

He broke the duopoly of Glasgow Rangers and Celtic, guiding Aberdeen to three Scottish League titles in 1980, 1984 and 1985.

However, arguably Ferguson’s finest moment with Aberdeen was on the European stage.

Following a Scottish Cup triumph in 1982, Aberdeen qualified for the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Ferguson’s team reached the final, with a 3-2 quarterfinal second-leg victory over Bayern Munich one of the many highlights of an impressive campaign.

In the final, held in Gothenberg on May 11, 1983, Aberdeen faced Spanish giants Real Madrid, managed by the great Alfredo Di Stefano.

The match finished in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes, before striker John Hewitt scored the winner for Aberdeen in extra-time.

Jock Stein’s death

One of the most poignant moments of Ferguson’s career arrived just over a year before he was appointed to the United job.

Ferguson was part of Jock Stein’s coaching staff with the Scottish national team ahead of a crucial 1986 World Cup qualifying match against Wales in Cardiff.

Scotland needed a point to reach the tournament in Mexico, which they duly acquired following a 1-1 draw.

But the match was overshadowed when Stein, the first British coach to win the European Cup with Celtic in 1967, collapsed after the final whistle.

“I grabbed for him as he started to fall,” Ferguson recalled, when talking to the Daily Mail in 2012. “The medics came out of the tunnel. I held him until he was helped inside.

“When I left to speak to the press I saw Graeme Souness and he was crying. ‘I think he’s gone,’ Graeme said. I couldn’t believe it.

“When we filed on to the bus there were thousands standing outside and the quiet sadness of the atmosphere was unforgettable. The abiding memory is of a solemn silence. It was as if the king had died.

“In football terms, the king had died.”

2012: Ferguson: ‘Racism still exists’

2012: Ferguson talks to CNN

Ferguson coached Scotland at the 1986 World Cup, but the team headed home after the first round following a group phase campaign which yielded just one point.

After watching the pressures of football get the better of his mentor, it raises the question of whether Stein’s death played a role in Ferguson’s decision to bow out on his own terms.

FA Cup redemption

After a trophy-laden spell at Pittodrie with Aberdeen, Ferguson headed south to join United in 1986, but his early days at Old Trafford were a world away from the glorious success he enjoyed in the 1990s and 2000s.

Two seasons passed without a trophy and after eight league games without a win, it was suggested Ferguson would be sacked if United lost an FA Cup replay against Nottingham Forest on January 7 1990 .

Substitute Mark Robins scored the winner to send United into the next round and, allegedly, save Fergie’s job.

Ferguson went on to mastermind a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace in an FA Cup final replay after the first match finished 3-3 to secure the Scot’s first trophy at Old Trafford.

The silverware continued to flow, with an English Premier League title — the club’s first in 26 years — arriving in 1993.

Deja vu?

Ferguson’s retirement was originally scheduled for 11 years ago. The Scot announced in 2001 that the forthcoming season would be his last, hoping his decision to break the news in advance would allow the club to make suitable succession plans.

But it had the opposite effect and, by November 2001, defending champions United sat ninth in the Premier League table.

By January 2002, after an eight-match winning run, United had risen to the top of the table and the next month Ferguson reversed his decision to retire from the game by signing a new three-year contract at Old Trafford.

Bobby Charlton: Ferguson’s best moment

Will Mourinho replace Ferguson?

The rest, as they say, is history. Six further English titles have followed, along with an FA Cup triumph and the Champions League in 2008.

The Flying Boot

In addition to the trophies and the accolades, there have been plenty of spats, with numerous star players feeling the heat of Ferguson’s infamous “hairdryer” treatment.

Notably when a “one in a million” flying boot caught David Beckham above the left eye, an incident which dominated the headlines like no other flare up between Ferguson and one of his charges.

Following a 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Arsenal in February 2003, Ferguson launched a tirade at his star midfielder which, according to Beckham’s autobiography, went along the lines of “David, what about the second goal? What were you doing? . . . We told you about it before the game. The problem with you is you don’t let anyone talk to you. You don’t listen’.

“I felt like I was being bullied in public,” explained Beckham, who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain. “I was being backed into a corner for no other reason than spite. I was trapped.”

Beckham swore at Ferguson and bedlam ensued.

“The boss took a step or two towards me,” Beckham continued. “There was a boot on the floor. He swung his leg and kicked it. At me? At the wall? It could have been anywhere, he was that angry now.

“I went for the gaffer. I don’t know if I’ve ever lost control like that before. Suddenly it was like some mad scene out of a gangster movie.”

Beckham’s teammates held him back, but after the incident, the then England captain appeared with a medical dressing over the cut above his eye.

“It was a freakish incident,” Ferguson reportedly said. “If I tried it 100 or a million times it couldn’t happen again. If I could I would have carried on playing!”

An increasingly tempestuous relationship between the two personalities came to an end on 1 July 2003, when Beckham left Manchester United to join Real Madrid.

Treble

May 26, 1999, was a night which simultaneously defied belief and defined Ferguson’s Manchester United reign.

United were chasing history. The league title had been wrapped up, beating Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal to the Premier League title by just one point.

FA Cup success followed. Goals from striker Teddy Sheringham and midfielder Paul Scholes secured a straight-forward 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the final at Wembley.

Ferguson’s team were one step away from securing an unprecedented Premier League, FA Cup and European Champions League treble.

United’s opponents in the European Cup final at Barcelona’s Nou Camp stadium were Bayern Munich and the Germans looked set to win the showpiece match after Mario Basler’s first-half free-kick put them 1-0 ahead.

In search of a way back into the match, Ferguson threw on substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As the game ticked into extra-time, United earned a corner. Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel raced forward in a desperate attempt to force an equalizer.

The initial cross was cleared, but the ball fell to Ryan Giggs whose low shot from the edge of the box was turned into the net by Sheringham.

Cue jubilant celebrations among United players, fans and coaching staff, but uncontained joy was to follow seconds later.

United earned another corner kick in the final seconds of injury time. Sheringham flicked on Beckham’s cross at the near post and Solskjaer flung his right leg at the header to send the ball flying into the back of the net.

Bayern were beaten, United had completed an historic treble.

As Ferguson remarked to ITV after the incredible climax, “football, bloody hell.”

Hong Kong (CNN) — The news that Alex Ferguson is stepping down as Manchester United manager after 26 trophy-laden seasons will be reverberating far beyond British shores Wednesday, and no more so than in Asia where the club has a huge following.

To put this in perspective, a study recently commissioned by the newly-crowned English Premier League champions showed that the team’s global fan base had doubled to 659 million people between 2007 and 2012 — with 325 million fans from Asia alone.

The figures are staggering, though the number of Manchester United shirts — official merchandise or not — that can be seen around the streets of any major city in the region, from Bangkok to Shanghai, goes some way towards illustrating this phenomenal interest.

Another, known as @Drshankui, said: “Although I don’t really like Manchester and their red polo shirts, I have to say Ferguson is one of the most respected coaches. Now that he’s going to retire soon, I felt really sad. I want to thank him for bringing all the splendidness to the team!”

Wednesday’s news also found its way into the mainstream media in China, including 163.com, one of the country’s most popular news platforms.

Lucrative

United has not been slow to recognize the benefits of this global appeal, regularly taking part in lucrative pre-season tours at packed venues across Asia to connect with local fans. In July, the team will visit Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan and Australia.

The club has also signed a number of sponsorship deals with “Asian partners,” including banks in Vietnam and a Japanese social gaming company — though this Asian “sweet spot” has also been clear in the minds of sponsors beyond the region.

READ: United buoyed by sponsorship deals

“We’ve gone from no brand awareness in countries like Japan and South Korea to incredible brand awareness,” Phil Clement, chief marketing officer at Aon, told the Financial Times when explaining the U.S. insurance giant’s decision to put pen to paper on a $23 million sponsorship deal earlier this year.

United even explored the idea of an Asian stock market floatation in either Hong Kong or Singapore last year, as it eyed investors — though market volatility at the time put these plans on hold.

Winning habit

So why is the club so popular in Asia?

The reason is fairly straightforward, according to James Porteous, a sports journalist at the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong.

“The one thing Asian football fans value above anything else is winning, and under Alex Ferguson, Manchester United have simply been one of the most successful clubs in the world. Liverpool have a big following in Asia because of their great history, but that’s taken a dent given their recent trophy-starved years.

“While newer champions such as Chelsea and Manchester City have been on the rise, United have had a consistent record of success under Ferguson, gaining new fans in Asia with every trophy won over the last two decades.

“United’s history also gives them great glamor and prestige, from the great names of the 1960s and the tragedy of the Busby Babes, and that is also attractive to fans in the region. But most of their popularity is down to their triumphs in the last 20 years under Ferguson. Title after title, the Champions League twice, global megastars such as Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo … all these ingredients have made United’s football brand Asia’s best-loved.”

United has also invested wisely in talented Asian players, most recently signing Japan’s brightest talent, Shinji Kagawa. The attacking midfielder follows in the footsteps of South Korean star Park Ji-Sung, who spent seven hugely successful years at the club.

The result is United’s appeal borders on the fanatical at times.

When the club announced plans to play in Hong Kong this year, its first visit to the city since 2005, tickets for the friendly against a local club sold out almost instantly. Porteous said former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was mobbed by fans when he arrived at Hong Kong airport to promote the game, and again by local journalists at a press conference — despite leaving the club in 1999.

“The reception I’ve had in only a couple of hours is incredible,” Schmeichel told journalists at the time.

“No doubt the club’s vast marketing arm will have many plans to maintain this popularity in Asia,” said Porteous. “But the key factor is simple: whoever the new manager is, he’ll have to keep winning trophies.”

London (CNN) — Manchester United will name a replacement for Alex Ferguson — English soccer’s most successful manager — on Thursday, according to widespread British media reports.

The 71-year-old Scot is retiring at the end of this season after more than a quarter of a century at the helm, the club announced Wednesday.

He has managed the newly-crowned Premier League champion, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and loved by millions of fans around the world, from Manchester to Manila and Montreal, since 1986.

Everton manager David Moyes is the bookmakers’ favorite to succeed his compatriot, and the 50-year-old will reportedly be confirmed as the next United boss on Thursday — though neither club has said such a statement is forthcoming.

The seven moments which define Alex FergusonThe seven moments which define Alex Ferguson

“David’s contract is up in six weeks’ time and he has a right to make his own decisions,” Everton chairman Bill Kenwright told Sky Sports on Wednesday.

“He’s served this club wonderfully well and he has a right to make his own decisions.”

During his 26 years in charge, Ferguson — a supporter of Britain’s Labour Party who’s renowned for dressing down players with the “hairdryer treatment” — has won more than 30 trophies, including 13 league championships.

Many fans took to Twitter to voice their appreciation, using the handle #thankyousiralex. He became Sir Alex when knighted by the queen more than a decade ago for his services to the game.

‘Thank you for everything,’ say Manchester United fans

As well as dominating on the pitch, Ferguson has helped build the century-old soccer club into a huge business operation whose progress is followed on stock exchanges around the world.

Its shares dipped nearly 5% in early trading Wednesday.

The Old Trafford club is owned by the American Glazer family, who oversaw the club’s listing on the New York Stock Exchange last August.

For the 2011-2012 season, United increased revenues by £14.2 million to £117.6 million ($182.4), the highest of any club in the Premier League.

But it lost the top spot as the world’s most valuable sports franchise in this year’s Forbes list to Spanish soccer club Real Madrid. Forbes valued Manchester United at $3.17 billion, still ahead of Barcelona, another Spanish soccer club, and two U.S. outfits, the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball and the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL.

Who will replace Alex Ferguson?Who will replace Alex Ferguson?

Bobby Charlton: Ferguson’s best moment

Ferguson will bow out after the club’s last game of the season, an away match against West Bromwich Albion, on May 19, according to a statement from Manchester United.

Watch: Alex Ferguson’s legacy

Before then he will have one more home game for the “Red Devils” at Old Trafford on Sunday, against Swansea City.

‘A bright future’

Ferguson will join the club’s board as a director and “ambassador,” Manchester United said.

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time,” Ferguson said.

“It was important to me to leave an organization in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.”

The quality of the team, the balance of the players’ ages and its upcoming youth squad will contribute to its continued “success at the highest level” and “ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one,” he said.

Seven moments that defined Ferguson’s managerial career

Ferguson paid tribute to the club’s “players and staff, past and present,” thanking them “for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich.”

He also expressed gratitude to his own family, the Glazer family, and the club’s many supporters, at home and abroad.

“Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he’s also a wonderful person. His determination to succeed and dedication to the club have been truly remarkable,” Joel Glazer said.

The club also quotes former Manchester United and England captain Bryan Robson as saying Ferguson is the “greatest there has ever been.”

‘Extraordinary success’

Gavin Hamilton, editor of World Soccer magazine, told CNN he considers Ferguson to be unsurpassed as a manager in his time.

“In the modern era, where’s he’s dealt with the players on huge salaries and the corporate world that is now football, he has had extraordinary success,” he said.

“He’s tough and uncompromising and, I think, completely dedicated to being a winner.”

Whoever takes over at Old Trafford has a hard act to follow, Hamilton said — but Manchester United will have been planning carefully for this moment.

“There will definitely be someone in place, I think — the big question now is who that person will be because it’s been kept a secret from everyone until now,” Hamilton said.

Whoever it will be has a daunting, if exciting, prospect ahead.

“It’s the largest football club in the world, it’s the biggest management job in the world, and on top of that is the task of following the most successful manager in the club’s history,” Hamilton said.

While Moyes is favored for the job after more than a decade with EPL club Everton, other names on the bookmakers’ list include: Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, formerly of Chelsea and currently at Real Madrid; Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp; Michael Laudrup of Swansea City; and former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, currently managing Norwegian team Molde.

Fans’ thoughts are bound to turn quickly to the 2013-2014 season, starting in September, as Manchester United prepares to defend its domestic title and attempts another win in Europe.

2012: Ferguson talks to CNN

Ferguson’s retirement ‘a sad day’

As recently as last week, Ferguson suggested that he was fully involved in those future plans, promising the club would be “competitive” in the summer transfer market.

Speaking to Inside United, the club’s official magazine, Ferguson said: “Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need.”

Manchester United coasted to this year’s English Premier League title with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in April, with four games in hand.

Ferguson is due to undergo hip surgery this summer, according to UK media reports, but it’s not clear how much of a role health concerns have played in his decision to stand down.

“I think retirement’s for young people because you can do something else. When you get to my age, if your health is good, you like to work,” he told CNN in a 2010 interview.

Sports writer Mihir Bose said he was surprised by the timing of Ferguson’s decision, despite his upcoming surgery, saying he had expected him to carry on as manager for another couple of years.

Ferguson — who is seen as a kind of father figure by some of the young players he developed — has “that ability to reach out to people,” said Bose, but he is also a skilled political operator.

“He could be delightful but he was a man who made sure that he controlled the agenda,” he told CNN. “If you crossed his path he made it very clear that he controlled everything at Manchester United.”

Those who got the famous “hairdryer treatment” — loud shouting directly in someone’s face — included many sports journalists over the years. Ferguson would also refuse to speak to reporters if he didn’t like what they said.

Despite that thorny relationship, Ferguson will be remembered as an iconic figure in English football history, said Bose. The big challenge now is how Manchester United will manage the transition to ensure continued success, he added.

‘A sad day’

Former Manchester United and Denmark goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel told CNN he was still trying to make sense of the news.

Alex Ferguson’s football legacy

2012: Ferguson: ‘Racism still exists’

“It is a sad day. I’m shocked, I’m sad, I’m disappointed. It’s a day I think everyone who loves Manchester United, everyone who’s worked with Sir Alex — it’s a day that we’ve been expecting, but I have to be honest I didn’t think it would be now — I thought it would be a couple of years down the line.”

Schmeichel said he was certain that Ferguson had not been forced out but had made the decision himself, given his record of success and changes already happening on the club’s board this summer.

He paid tribute to Ferguson’s knowledge, skills and philosophy as a manager, particularly his ability to bring on young players.

Internationally known footballers like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt were all created by Ferguson, Schmeichel said.

“He is the best manager in the world and he’s the best guy as well. He’s a really good friend as well.”

Ferguson’s talent has been in managing players individually rather than as a group, Schmeichel said.

“The end result is that everyone plays really well for the team,” Schmeichel said. “Yes, he can be hard, he can be tough. … In a way he becomes your second dad. He has to educate you in life, he has to prepare you for what comes next in life after football.”

‘Vision, energy, ability’

David Gill, who will step down as chief executive of Manchester United in June, said it had been a “tremendous pleasure” to work alongside Ferguson over the past 16 years.

“We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first class condition,” he said.

“Alex’s vision, energy and ability have built teams — both on and off the pitch — that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.”

Ferguson began his career on the soccer pitch, playing for Scottish clubs Queen’s Park, St. Johnstone, Dunfermline, Glasgow Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United.

But it was when he returned to the game as a manager, working at East Stirlingshire, St. Mirren and then Aberdeen that people really began to take notice.

He led Aberdeen to three Scottish titles, four Scottish cups, one League Cup and one European Cup Winners’ Cup before moving to Manchester United in November 1986 following the dismissal of former manager Ron Atkinson.

It didn’t take long for the Scotsman to start turning things round at a club that was then near the bottom of the league.

Since then, Ferguson has dominated the English game — his string of victories making him, according to the Manchester United website, “the most successful manager in British football history.”

Ferguson’s retirement ‘a sad day’

Alex Ferguson’s football legacy

Bobby Charlton: Ferguson’s best moment

Will Mourinho replace Ferguson?

And the interest goes beyond simply wearing a replica shirt. Within minutes of the shock announcement, football fans in China flocked to Weibo, the country’s version of Twitter, to lament Ferguson’s departure.

“Farewell Fergie,” posted one netizen, known as @HuxuanzheChuckHoo. “Sir Alex Forever!” declared @Yesmanduomehao.

London (CNN) — English soccer’s most successful manager — Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson — is retiring at the end of the season after more than a quarter of a century at the helm, the club announced Wednesday.

The 71-year-old Scot has managed the English club, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and loved by millions of fans around the world, from Manchester to Manila and Montreal, since 1986.

Will Mourinho replace Ferguson?

Bobby Charlton: Ferguson’s best moment

2012: Ferguson talks to CNN

It’s not clear who the club will choose to replace him.

Ferguson’s retirement ‘a sad day’

2012: Ferguson: ‘Racism still exists’

Bookmakers are already taking bets on who will fill Ferguson’s shoes.

Names at the top of the list include Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, formerly of Chelsea and currently at Real Madrid, and Everton manager David Moyes.

Other names in the mix include Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp, Michael Laudrup of Swansea City and former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, currently managing Norwegian team Molde.

Health concerns?

Fans’ thoughts are bound to turn quickly to the 2013-2014 season, starting in September, as Manchester United prepares to defend its domestic title and attempts another win in Europe.

CNN’s Alex Thomas and Patrick Sung contributed to this report.

Jose Mourinho is widely expected to leave Real Madrid for English club Chelsea at the end of season

(CNN) — If Jose Mourinho’s time at Real Madrid is nearing an end then he seems determined not to go quietly.

The outspoken Portuguese coach’s time at the Spanish giants — one of the world’s biggest soccer clubs — has been adorned with three major trophies but also with a healthy dose of controversy.

He has had to fend off regular reports of dressing room unrest and a rift with one of Real’s key players, goalkeeper Iker Casillas, the World Cup-winning captain of Spain.

The 50-year-old has been strongly linked with a return to the English Premier League and former club Chelsea, with the current coach of the London-based club hinting on Tuesday Mourinho is set to replace him.

José Mourinho: ‘I hate my social life’

But for the time being, Mourinho remains in situ at Real and used his latest press conference to hit back at defender Pepe, who had criticized his treatment of the benched Casillas in the press.

Pepe has lost his place in the side to young French defender Rafael Varane in recent weeks.

Mourinho, in typically bullish mood, told reporters: “Pepe’s problem is easy to analyze. His name is Varane. You don’t have to be a genius, just a normal guy like me to understand that we’re talking about frustration.

“It’s not easy for a player to see how he’soutperformed by a 19 year-old kid, but the kid is fantastic. I had the courage to play him and the problem is very simple. Pepe’s life as an athlete has changed.

“He was permanent starter and it is also one of my decisions that didn’t lead to a public discussion. I understand his frustration perfectly, and that it translated into what he said.

“Things are clear and I have no issue with him. It’s not an easy situation. I have to try to be honest and most people think that Real Madrid’s defensive future is Varane and Ramos.”

Mourinho’s decision to drop Casillas, who has been with Real his entire career and is a poster boy to the club’s many fans, has been met with many questions.

After Casillas picked up an injury in January, Mourinho signed Sevilla’s Diego Lopez, and continued to play him even after Casillas regained full fitness.

It led to much criticism of the coach, who reiterated on Tuesday that Lopez’s style of goalkeeping was more to his liking.

“I like Diego Lopez as a goalkeeper more than Casillas,” he explained. “It’s not personal, I just like him more. I like a goalkeeper that comes out and dominates the airspace and plays with his feet.

“Iker is fantastic under the posts and I can also say that he likes a coach like (Spanish national team coach) Vicente Del Bosque or with a different profile more.

“One’s more offensive, the other defensive. I have the right to say this and with me, in normal conditions, Diego Lopez is going to play. People can say what they want, I accept that but please respect a coach who decides who plays.”

Mourinho’s time at the Bernabeu has been mixed. He has won one La Liga title, last season, but looks set to miss out to archrivals Barcelona this time around.

His quest to win the European Champions League for a third time in his career has also faltered. Recently, his side were beaten 4-3 on aggregate by German club Borussia Dortmund at the semifinal stage.

Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to return to England with media reports claiming he has already negotiated a return to Chelsea at the end of the season.

His previous spell in charge saw him lead the club to their first top flight title for 55 years. He won five trophies in his three seasons in London.

Only last week he said, “I know I am loved by some clubs, especially one,” which was widely regarded as confirmation of his desire to once again coach at Stamford Bridge.

On Tuesday Chelsea’s current manager, Rafael Benitez, confirmed he would be leaving at the end of the season and added: “The next year there will be another manager. I think everybody knows who will be here.”

Mourinho, who has a contract at Real until 2016, revealed he’s considered remaining at Real and refuted claims that is to do with a dispute over his severance package.

Reports in Spain and the UK claim whoever breaks their agreement will owe the other party $26 million. “I’ve considered staying. The fans think what you, the press, sell them,” he said.

“To make things clear I’ll tell you that I’ll be paid until my last working day here. I don’t want even one euro more the day I decide that I’m not going to continue.”

(CNN) — In the U.S., a referee is punched and later dies. Meanwhile In Europe, a Dutch volunteer linesman is beaten to death, a teenage Spanish referee is violently assaulted, and in Germany a match official is hospitalized.

They are almost as essential to the functioning of the game as the ball they bring onto the pitch for kickoff, but soccer referees across the world are feeling under siege.

Subjected to vulgar insults, threatened, chased off the field, attacked, hospitalized and, tragically, killed.

In the most recent incident, 46-year old Ricardo Portillo — refereeing an amateur game in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville — was punched on April 27 after booking a player. He died from his injuries on Saturday.

What is behind this apparent wave of violence, which largely affects those grassroots officials whose role is so vital in maintaining the development of the so-called “Beautiful Game?”

Some say it’s the direct result of bad examples set by the elite echelons of the sport, some say it’s a cultural problem — and others point to the very parents who go to watch their kids play.

CNN Football Club: Nani’s controversial red

Did referee end United’s chances?

“You feel completely helpless,” says Jose Giner, who looked on in horror from the stands the day his son was brutally attacked during a Spanish regional match in February.

Hector Giner, just 17, was savagely attacked in Burjassot, Valencia after attempting to send off a player who had insulted him.

As the teen looked down and began to write in his notebook, the player — a policeman 10 years his senior, named as “Alberto M.M.” in media reports — struck Giner a blow in the face, then delivered two kicks to the body as he lay prone on the floor.

In hospital the young student lost his spleen and three liters of blood. His attacker has been suspended from his job ahead of the trial, for which the date has yet to be set.

A complex issue

That Sunday — February 17, 2013 — was an ugly warning for Spanish football, but it was far from an isolated case of arbitrary violence against the country’s 15,000 referees.

“All parents will understand how I felt that day,” Jose Giner told CNN. “I think referees in the lower leagues are definitely not as well protected as they should be. Those responsible should sit down together to take action.”

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) acknowledges the need for solutions and says it has begun working together with the Spanish police — the Guardia Civil — to “initiate a protocol of security and prevention.”

“Effectively, with the referees in lower categories we attempt to protect them in the best manner possible,” Juan Castillo Jimenez of the Technical Committee for Referees at RFEF told CNN.

But the task at hand is a complex one, beginning with incessant verbal abuse from players and spectators which can be difficult to stop.

“Well, yes, there is a lot of verbal violence,” admits Alejandro Urrego, a player in the same Valencia regional league where the Giner incident took place. “Referees are scared to show red cards to those insulting them for the possibly violent consequences.”

The RFEF acknowledges that parents have become some of the worst culprits in aggressive behavior towards referees in Spain.

“Parents are worse than the kids,” says Emilio Jose Ayuso, a 21-year-old referee who talked to CNN at halftime of a youth match he was officiating in Aranjuez, a small town one hour south of Madrid.

“There are a lot of insults from the sidelines. You just have to ignore it. There is nothing you can do about it.”

Problem starts at home?

One Europe-wide manner of tackling the problem has been to move spectators further away from the touchline, thereby reducing their influence on referees.

Still, insults have become so commonplace that some refs have begun to take an aggressive attitude onto the pitch themselves, according to one parent.

“Parents are definitely to blame,” says Cristina, a mother of two who watches her son play in the same match where Ayuso is the referee. She preferred not to give her surname.

“Two members of my close family are referees, so I know what kind of insults they have to hear, and ignore, every weekend.

“But I’ve also seen a referee who insulted the kids — I couldn’t believe my eyes when it happened in my son’s game the other week. It also happens.”

Another factor in Spain is that referees have traditionally been the target of abuse by football fans — though usually verbal not physical.

“We blame everything on the ref,” says Jose, a taxi driver in Madrid, who also did not want to give his full name.

“Even ‘la crisis’ (the financial crisis), if we could. The stadium is the place for Spaniards to vent their frustration. If parents set such a bad example, imagine how the next generation is growing up.”

Bad role models

That lack of respect for match officials filters down from the top teams and players, according to journalist Cayetano Ros.

Will Mourinho replace Ferguson?

Jerome Valcke: Match-fixing a ‘disease’

How does match fixing occur?

Last May, Granada forward Dani Benitez was suspended for throwing a water bottle at the face of referee Clos Gomez while his teammates contested the award of a penalty to opponent Real Madrid. The previous month linesman Cesar David Escribano was struck by an object thrown from the stands during a second division match at Cartagonova.

“I think we are all to blame, also the media,” said Cayetano Ros, who covered the Giner attack for El Pais newspaper. “It is getting better than it was 20 or 30 years ago, but there is still a culture of pressuring the referees: it is definitely a danger.”

At a La Liga match between Getafe and Deportivo La Coruna in early 2013, the referee sent off a home player early on, and was hounded by home fans for the rest of the game. Small children sat nearby listening to the verbal abuse.

Veteran Spanish football observer Phil Ball says it is a cultural model that needs changing.

“If you don’t pressure the ref here, you’re seen as stupid,” says Ball, the author of “Morbo: The story of Spanish football.” He calls it a “tactical” approach, and freely admits to talking to the linesman during matches his son plays.

“There’s a saying in Spain: ‘El que no llora, no mama’ (he who doesn’t cry, doesn’t get the milk), and it’s applied to football in Spain,” Ball told CNN.

“I saw a particularly bad example in the Donosti Cup 2011 (a youth tournament), when a referee was chased off the pitch by a team called Ciudad Jardin from Valencia. You can’t solve things unless you change the culture. You have to come down hard on perpetrators.”

Ayuso believes that punishments are not enough — education is the key.

“To become a referee, the Madrid Football Federation makes us take a course as well as two classes with a psychologist, because it is common knowledge that you’ll be verbally abused,” he said.

“I think a solution could be to give psychological classes to teams. That way they see that we too can make mistakes. But as it is, you definitely go to some grounds with a great deal of respect. Valencia and Holland are always at the back of your mind.”

Dutch dilemma

The problem of violence against referees came to worldwide prominence in December 2012 after a shocking incident in the Netherlands.

Mendieta: Barca, Real out in front

A group of teenage players beat 41-year-old Richard Nieuwenhuizen to death after a youth match in which he had been a volunteer linesman. His son had been playing in the opposing team to that of his attackers.

It was a tragic attack that moved an entire nation, and the Dutch football association took immediate action.

“After the incident the Dutch FA decided that there should be more respect for referees,” says Jan ter Harmsel, a journalist and referee who runs a blog website for match officials.

“Only captains can talk to the referee now, other players would be booked immediately,”

Former Netherlands international player Ronald de Boer agrees that the fatal attack has had a big impact, but worries that the reaction by officials has been too strong.

“Football is emotion, and in a way the changes killed the game a little bit. Now yellow cards are shown for everything,” the former Ajax, FC Barcelona and Glasgow Rangers midfielder told CNN, while acknowledging that players in Holland “moan too much.”

“Certainly we have to pay attention to give a lot of respect to referees, starting with the parents in their education of their kids,” said De Boer, who now works with Ajax’s youth setup.

The Dutch FA (KNVB) sent CNN figures which showed that while yellow cards shown to players have not increased overall since the December 21 attack, the numbers of bookings for dissent to officials has almost tripled from 0.17 per game before December 21 to 0.48 each match since.

On trial

The new KNVB charter has a broad social backing, according to its press office chief Marloes van der Laan.

“After issuing an appeal on Facebook, KNVB headquarters in Zeist received a veritable deluge of emails and letters containing suggestions about how to improve the overall atmosphere surrounding Dutch football matches,” van der Laan said.

Berlusconi is an opportunist, who will say anything to win short-term support, Italian historian John Foot -- the author of the authoritative book on Italian football Calcio -- told CNN, in reference to the AC Milan owner's support for Boateng after the player walked off the pitch. His comments are hypocritical at best, especially given his alliance with anti-immigrant and far-right parties, and his comments on Barack Obama (he called him 'sun-tanned'), added Foot. I don't think you can run away, because then the team should have to forfeit the match, FIFA president Sepp Blatter told Abu Dhabi's The National newspaper. “All these suggestions were considered, many were taken on board and some were adopted in the FA’s action plan. In addition, on December 21, the KNVB issued a Charter titled ‘No Football Without Respect.’ The Charter listed no new rules, but provided for stricter enforcement of existing ones.”

Harmsel, a youth referee in The Hague, believes the education of younger generations needs to be addressed.

“The Richard Nieuwenhuizen incident was a few months ago, but I heard about an abandoned under-eight match last weekend,” he said. This time, the coach of one team took his players off the field in protest at a lack of protection from alleged opposition foul play.

The Dutch Organization of Soccer Referees, meanwhile, told CNN that little has changed as a result of the December 2 attack on Nieuwenhuizen, whose assailants began a pretrial hearing on Monday — six teens and one of their fathers appeared in court charged with murder.

“Although awareness of the problem of violence in society in general and on the soccer pitch in particular was raised immediately following the serious accident, and although there was one weekend with no soccer for the non-professional leagues, by now things are back to ‘normal,’ ” said the organization’s secretary Willie Peijnenburg.

“Several actions of awareness raising are being prepared, but since the incident several referees have been attacked again, even in friendly matches.”

Physical intimidation

In neighboring Germany, the situation is equally worrying: the country’s 70,000-plus match officials are subjected to what they feel are increasing levels of violence.

Leading football magazine Kicker is running a series on increasing violence against referees and dwindling referee numbers nationwide, while the influential Der Spiegel wrote in December 2012 about a string of violent attacks against lower league referees.

The most serious of these came in September 2011 in Berlin, when Gerald Bothe was assaulted on the pitch for showing a player a second yellow card.

The parallels with the recent attack in Valencia are chilling. Bothe was unconscious for 10 minutes, swallowed his tongue, and was hospitalized for several days.

A study at the University of Tubingen, which interviewed 2,600 regional referees, showed that 40% had been threatened, while 17% said they had been physically attacked. Those are worrying numbers, particularly for young referees such as Max Klein.

At two meters tall, the 18-year-old towers above most players, but still admits to being intimidated by the frequent cases of violence against referees that he hears about on social networks.

“Of course it is a shock to a young referee to hear of cases like Valencia and Holland,” said Klein. “There are a lot of cases here too. Since I started four years ago it has certainly gotten worse. You don’t hear about it in the mainstream media because it happens in lower divisions, but a referee friend of mine posts it all on Facebook.

“Just the other day a player waited in the locker room and beat up a referee. So before you whistle a game, you think, ‘Hopefully I don’t whistle a rough lot today.’ “

Herbert Fandel, the head of the German Football Association (DFB) referee commission, has acknowledged that violence is a factor in influencing dwindling referee numbers.

“The verbal and physical violence against referees is also a sign of our times, a mirror of our society. Values like respect and decency are too often kicked with the feet,” Fandel wrote in the DFB’s referee magazine. The DFB told CNN that it is compiling statistics with regional associations, and could not comment at the moment.

Klein is just a few months older than the hospitalized referee in Valencia. He too has already had encounters with violence on the pitch, abandoning one match between teams of 14-year-olds in Konigsdorf, near Cologne, when the two coaches ran onto the pitch and started a brawl.

Klein says corrective action will be needed soon — 10 years ago there were 1,000 active referees in the wider Cologne area where he whistles, but now there are just 600, according to the DFB magazine. Overall referee numbers in Germany have been steadily decreasing, the DFB said.

“It would be tough to get a bodyguard for every referee,” Klein says with a wry smile. “So I think the best way forward is to introduce monetary fines for teams. That would really hit the aggressors hard where it hurts most — in their pockets.”

The blame game

Former international referee Tom Henning Ovrebo, who received death threats long after a controversial European match in 2009, would also like to see strict punishments.

“All over Europe you can find a culture of harassment against referees,” said the Norwegian, who was widely accused by media — and former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho — of favoring opposition team Barcelona in the second leg of a Champions League semifinal.

Spain dominates football's rich listSpain dominates football’s rich list

In 2011, Mourinho — by then coach of Real Madrid — named Ovrebo in a list of referees he claimed favored Barcelona after his team lost another Champions League semifinal match to the Catalan side.

Ovrebo says such criticism is part of the problem in fanning lower-league violence.

“I think all promising young players and coaches try to copy their heroes. And when they harass and blame the referees during or after a game, the young players and coaches will also do so,” said the 46-year-old, who retired from international level in 2010.

“And sometimes the media enhance the effect by showing everyone what a ‘jerk’ the referee is.”

Ovrebo believes refs need to be better prepared to deal with verbal and physical violence.

“In my local association … we teach them about the laws of the game and positioning, but little is done to prepare them for the mental demands.”

Ovrebo, who works as a psychologist, says that recent research links violence in football with the supposed safety of belonging to a crowd.

“One thing we know from research on hooliganism is that people tend to ‘de-individualize’ themselves and become more a group member who follows the group norms instead of their own norms,” he said.

‘Respect and trust’

The English Football Association, meanwhile, has taken an innovative approach to stopping violence against match officials by introducing the “Respect” program at grassroots level, using online videos to promote “effective dialogue” with players

“It should be noted that player behavior in the Premier League has increased greatly in recent years,” says Phil Dorward, head of public relations for the EPL and the body governing its match officials.

“In the past three seasons bookings for dissent have decreased by half. This has been the result of a lot of dialogue between all key parties.”

European soccer’s ruling body UEFA also has its own Respect program, spearheaded by former Netherlands international Clarence Seedorf and ex-leading referee Pierluigi Collina.

“There are a lot of meanings for respect on and off the field of play,” Collina said at last year’s launch. “Respect and trust between players and referees — which makes the referee’s job easier — or respect for the players from the fans.

“Respect is the only way to get a bright future for football.”

Giving up the whistle

World football’s governing body is well aware of the potentially devastating consequences of alienating referees from the game at grassroots level.

“For anyone who has ever played a game at whatever level, it is always more frustrating to play without a referee,” Massimo Busacca, the head of FIFA’s referees department, told CNN.

“If you behave badly and in a threatening manner, this ruins the enjoyment for others, and could even lead people to quit the game.”

That has been the consequence of Giner’s early encounter with violence in European football.

“Refereeing was his dream,” says his father. “For now, he will give up the whistle.”

Owen Neilson is writing a book about Italian football grounds, Stadio: The Life and Death of Italian Football. English managers: Where did it go wrong?English managers: Where did it go wrong?

Rafael Da Silva's clash with David Luiz caused a mass confrontation between the Manchester United and Chelsea players.

(CNN) — Manchester United’s post-title hangover continued on Sunday after a 1-0 defeat that kept Chelsea in pole position for England’s third Champions League place next season.

Juan Mata netted the only goal in the 86th minute before the game erupted from its previous lethargy as United defender Rafael da Silva was sent off for kicking out at fellow Brazilian David Luiz. Television replays showed the Chelsea player smiling on the floor afterwards.

It was United’s first red card this season, and means Rafael will miss the rest of the Premier League campaign with an automatic three-game ban.

“The referee was bought by the fact Luiz rolled about,” United manager Alex Ferguson said. “He actually elbowed Rafael twice but you know what happens when a player retaliates: he’s always punished more.

“Luiz made it look worse. I don’t think the referee saw it, actually, and he was convinced by Luiz’s reaction.”

The defeat followed United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal last weekend, having previously wrapped up a record-extending 20th title with four matches to play.

“Maybe this will waken the players up,” said Ferguson, ahead of next weekend’s final home match this season against Swansea.

“There was no edge to our game but I think Chelsea were the better team. Training was fine this week and there was a nice edge to it, but today it was missing. It’s been a long season for the players and their final really big effort was last week against Arsenal.”

Mata scored his 11th league goal this season, and 19th overall, to put Chelsea a point clear of fourth-placed Arsenal and three ahead of Tottenham in fifth.

Victory in Wednesday’s home clash with Spurs would virtually ensure qualification for Europe’s top club competition, given their London rivals’ inferior goal difference.

“If we can win we will be there, but Tottenham are a good team and it will be a final for the top four,” said manager Rafael Benitez, who has guided Chelsea to two wins over United since taking charge in December.

“This game was difficult and important for us. Wednesday will be even more important as we are so close to them. Winning is crucial for us, it’s even more important for them, so there will be a great atmosphere at Stamford Bridge.”

Benitez is hoping to have Eden Hazard available after the Belgium playmaker missed the trip to Old Trafford due to a calf injury.

“The physios are working with him and he could be fit,” said the Spaniard, whose team have played 12 games in just 37 days, reaching the final of the Europa League.

Everton’s chances of playing in Europe’s second-tier tournament next season suffered a blow in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

Manager David Moyes was angry that Sylvain Distin’s second-half header was ruled out for a foul by teammate Victor Anichebe on home goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

“It was a goal. The goalkeeper runs into our player so the goal should stand,” said Moyes after his sixth-placed team dropped five points behind Tottenham, having played one more game.

“If we run into the goalkeeper then give a foul for that, but he ran into us, so it was a goal.”

Liverpool, in the absence of suspended top scorer Luis Suarez, stayed seventh.
