(CNN) — Alex Ferguson’s 1500th and final game in charge of Manchester United ended with a freak 5-5 draw at West Bromwich Albion Sunday while Arsenal claimed the final Champions League place on the last day of the English Premier League season.

Ferguson’s farewell looked to end in customary winning fashion as the new champions led 3-0 and 5-2 at the Hawthorns until the home side hit back with three late goals in five minutes, Romelu Lukaku equalizing to complete his hat-trick.

It is the first time in the history of the EPL that two sides had shared 10 goals in a match.

It also marks the end of an era with the 71-year-old Ferguson ending his 26 year reign at Old Trafford with 38 trophies, including 13 EPL titles.

Michael Owen’s Liverpool regret?

Paul Scholes, so influential for United in their prolonged triumphs under the Scot, joined him in retirement. The 38-year-old midfielder came on as a substitute in the 69th minute, shortly before WBA’s extraordinary comeback.

It was a day marked by other farewells as Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher and his former club and England teammate Michael Owen, now with Stoke, ended their playing careers.

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez also took charge of the Blues for the final time, seeing Fernando Torres score the crucial goal in a 2-1 win over Everton which finally sealed third spot ahead of Arsenal.

It was also David Moyes’ last game in charge of Everton before he takes over from Ferguson at United.

With relegation matters settled by Arsenal’s 4-1 defeat to condemn Wigan to the drop in midweek, Arsene Wenger’s team needed to win at Newcastle to deny North London rivals the coveted fourth spot.

A goal from French defender Laurent Koscielny just after halftime proved enough despite some nervy late moments.

The anxiety increased as news came from White Hart Lane that another Gareth Bale wonder strike had given Tottenham a late 1-0 lead against 10-man Sunderland, who had David Vaughan sent off.

But Arsenal, who mounted an impressive late season charge, were left to celebrate a 17th straight year in Europe’s premier club competition.

“The players are special. I’ve told them many times but they’ve shown it in the last two months they’ve been absolutely exceptional,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

Tottenham must contemplate the Europa League again after finishing one point adrift.

It was cruel for manager Andre Villas-Boas, his side achieving the highest points tally with 72 of a side not qualifying for the Champions League.

“It is difficult to take, in the end we did what we had to but Arsenal did their job well and go through. It is difficult at this moment,” he told Sky Sports.

Manchester City, without a manager after dispensing with Roberto Mancini, slumped to a 3-2 home defeat to Norwich, but had already clinched second spot.

Stoke, with Owen coming on for 16 minutes, drew 1-1 with Southampton while FA Cup winners Wigan drew 2-2 with Aston Villa.

Reading, relegated with Wigan and QPR, lost 4-2 at West Ham and Fulham won 3-0 at League Cup winners Swansea.

Carragher hit the post but Liverpool saw off QPR 1-0 at Anfield with Philippe Coutinho scoring the only goal.

Editor’s note: Art of Movement is CNN’s monthly show exploring the latest innovations in art, culture, science and technology.

(CNN) — A prehistoric roar drowns out the delighted squeals of children madly dashing out of the path of the giant creature plodding towards them.

They need not hurry. The fantastical 48-ton elephant with flapping leather ears and undulating wooden trunk takes his time as he huffs and puffs his way across the park.

Welcome to Les Machines de L’lle — a former shipping yard turned mechanical animal “dream factory,” in the industrial port city of Nantes, in northwest France.

Dockyard to dream factory

The once dilapidated warehouses lining the riverfront have been transformed into a type of psychedelic Santa’s workshop, with artists building everything from enormous flying herons to a carousel revolving with deep sea creatures.

Thoughts move bionic arm

But these whimsical animals are more than simply elaborate children’s toys.

They’re moving works of art, available for the public to climb on board and experience a retro fantasyland that “blends the invented worlds of Jules Verne and the mechanical universe of Leonardo Di Vinci.”

Read: Snake arms and crystal legs push boundaries of art

“The animals are conceived to be ‘traveling machines’ instead of big thrills entrainment,” said its co-artistic director Francois Delaroziere.

“It’s the desire to conceive a city through a common imagination, in which the public becomes an actor.”

The remarkable amusement park is the brainchild of La Machine, a street theater company famous for such creations as the 15-meter spider that crawled through Liverpool, in Britain, as part of the city’s Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008.

In 2007, the $19 million Les Machine de L’lle opened in the hope of regenerating Nantes’ deserted dockyards, which had been in decay since closing in 1987.

Backed by the local Metropole, the 337-hectare site is now one of the largest urban projects in Europe.

Free to the public, anyone can wander around the workshops filled with artists hammering and carving their latest creations — though if you want to clamber on one of the marvelous animals, you’ll need to buy a ticket.

Vintage Verne

The 25-meter tall Marine Worlds Carousel is the park’s newest attraction, featuring 24 mechanical waves and three levels of rotating sea creatures — from slack-jawed lantern fish to wriggling squid.

The animals’ hand-carved vintage style has a charming Steampunk quality — a genre of science-fiction featuring steam-powered machinery.

The alluring aesthetic is all the more fitting, considering Nantes is also the birthplace of 19th century writer Jules Verne.

Indeed, the sea monsters of his famous novel “20,000 Leagues under the Sea” come alive in the glowing merry-go-round teetering on the water’s edge.

The 12-meter tall elephant — lumbering beneath an ornate balcony of waving passengers — is also reminiscent of Verne’s book “The Steam House,” featuring a group of colonialists living in a wheeled house pulled by a steam-powered elephant.

Making a move

The Great Elephant may amble across the park at a gentle three kilometers per hour, but inside he’s a hive of activity — propelled by a 450-horse power motor, 60 cylinders, 2,000-liters of oil, and a complex system of jacks, pulleys and gears.

A steel skeleton forms the base of the wooden body — replete with wrinkles carved beneath the blinking eyes.

Read: Thought-powered bionic arm ‘like something from space’

But the hydraulic beast isn’t quite left to roam free, with an on-board driver steering him across the park, spraying onlookers with water from his rippling trunk.

“Sketchbooks are a starting point in creative process,” says Delaroziere. “They offer ideas for the seizing, define the rules of the game, and provide a rich basis for builders to begin constructing their interpretations on.”

Real big things

The fantastical world of Jules Verne looms large at Les Machines de L’lle.

But there’s a distinct difference between the French author’s pioneering novels and the psychedelic Steampunk park of his birthplace.

As Delaroziere says: “Jules Verne’s creations remain imaginary. Whereas we built real machines.”

Balotelli’s racism vow

May 18th, 2013 No comments

Editor’s note: CNN will publish a full exclusive interview with AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli on Friday May 17 at 1200 ET, where he says he thinks he was treated unfairly in England, finds it hard being a global icon and admits having a love for women and fast cars.

(CNN) — Leading international soccer player Mario Balotelli has had enough — the AC Milan striker has vowed to walk off the pitch next time he is racially abused at a football game.

Balotelli, who was subjected to racist chanting during Sunday’s Italian league game against Roma, has told CNN in an exclusive interview that he came close to leaving the field following the abuse at AC Milan’s San Siro stadium in a match that finished 0-0.

The 22-year-old put his fingers to his lips in front of the visiting supporters’ section as a section of fans directed “monkey chants” at him and teammate Kevin Prince-Boateng.

“I always said that if it (racism) happened in the stadium I will just do like ‘nobody says nothing and I don’t care,’” Balotelli told CNN.

“But this time I think I’ve changed my mind a little bit. If it’s going to happen one more time, then I’m going to leave the pitch because it’s so stupid.”

The abuse led to the game being halted for two minutes as the stadium’s PA announcer warned the Roma supporters to end the abuse or the match would be stopped.

Balotelli is not the first player from AC Milan — one of Europe’s top clubs, having won 18 national titles and seven continental crowns — – to face racist abuse this season.

In January, Boateng did walk off the pitch after being racially abused during a friendly against Pro Patria.

That action prompted governing bodies FIFA and UEFA to rethink the way clubs and players are punished if they are found guilty of racist abuse.

Balotelli revealed that his teammate Boateng — who was a guest speaker at the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in March — persuaded him not to leave the field of play on Sunday.

“I spoke with Prince,” added Balotelli. “I was about to leave the pitch on Sunday, but they thought I wanted to leave because we had some difficulty with the game and then we are going to win 3-0.

“I said ‘no, it’s better we play and I will talk,’ that’s it.

“But if it wasn’t for this reason, then I was going to leave the pitch on Sunday.”

On Monday Roma was fined $65,000 by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) — a punishment that drew sharp criticism from FIFA president Sepp Blatter

“What is $65,000 for such an incident? I’m not happy and I will call the Italian Federation,” the head of football’s world governing body told the FIFA website. “That’s not a way to deal with such matters.”

Italy's complex racism problemItaly’s complex racism problem

Throughout the season Italian football has been plagued by racist incidents as the country struggles to deal with the problem.

Only last month, Inter Milan was fined around $60,000 by European governing body UEFA after its fans were found guilty of “improper conduct” after racist chants were directed at Tottenham’s Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

In February, Roma’s fierce city rival, Lazio, received its fourth UEFA charge of the season for racist behavior with the club accruing fines of up to $300,000

This is not the first time Balotelli has suffered racist abuse.

The striker was targeted by fans of his former club — Inter Milan — in a Serie A game after he joined Milan in a $30 million deal from Manchester City in January.

Inter was fined $65,500 by the FIGC following the incidents while the player was also hit with a $13,000 fine for aiming a gesture at fans as he left the field at the full time whistle. Balotelli played for Inter between 2006 and 2010.

The 22-year-old was also subjected to racist abuse while on international duty with Italy — Croatia fans were found guilty of throwing bananas at the forward during the 2012 European Championship Finals.

There was also embarrassment for Milan in February when the club’s vice president Paulo Berlusconi, the younger brother of former prime minster and team owner Silvio Berlusconi, was caught on camera referring to Balotelli’s arrival by saying: “OK, we are all off to see the family’s little black boy.

“He’s a crazy head. All the young ladies are invited as well — you can even have a chance to meet the president (Silvio Berlusconi).”

The video, which was featured on the website of Italian Newspaper La Repubblica, was condemned by anti-racism campaigners.

Milan have won the Italian title 18 times and the European Cup (now known as the Champions League) seven times.

Ferdinand quits international football

May 15th, 2013 No comments

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has represented England 81 times, but not since June 2011.

(CNN) — The retirements are coming thick and fast out of Old Trafford, with Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand the latest to call time — on his international career.

The 34-year-old’s retirement follows the farce that ensued in March when he was recalled by England manager Roy Hodgson for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro, only for Ferdinand to quickly withdraw due to his “pre-planned fitness program” with his club.

In a statement released by the English Football Association, Ferdinand explained that he wanted to retire from international football to “concentrate on my club career.”

David Moyes: Alex Ferguson's successorDavid Moyes: Alex Ferguson’s successor

“After a great deal of thought, I have decided the time is right for me to retire from international football,” added Ferdinand, who has not played for England since a Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland in June 2011.

“The team looks in great shape and there is an influx of young, talented players coming through the ranks which bodes well for the future.

“I regard it as a great honor and a privilege to have represented my country at every level from Under-17s upwards.

“I have always been very proud to play for England. I would like to wish Roy and the team all the best for future tournaments.

“A big thank you to all the fans, managers, coaching staff and players that I have worked alongside – the journey has been incredible.”

In October, Hodgson was forced to apologize to Ferdinand after an English newspaper reported he had told fellow commuters during a tube journey on London’s underground that the Manchester United defender’s international career was over.

Ferdinand had been controversially left out of England’s squad for Euro 2012 despite the United defender expressing his desire to add to his 81 international caps.

After leaving Ferdinand out of his Euro 2012 squad, Hodgson opted to take Chelsea captain John Terry, though the defender had been due in court to face allegations he racially abused Rio’s brother, Anton Ferdinand.

Hodgson insisted it was purely a football decision and Terry was cleared in July. But he was banned for four matches on the same charge by the FA and announced his retirement from international football.

After making his debut against Cameroon at Wembley in 1997, Ferdinand went on to win 81 caps for England, playing in three World Cups.

“It’s important to pay tribute to someone of Rio’s stature and the achievements he had in a senior international career with England over 14 years at the highest level,” said Hodgson

“To have captained his country, to play at three World Cups and indeed score in one of those, marks him out amongst a very special group of players.

“I appreciated the call from Rio to inform me of his decision, which clearly he had spent much time considering before reaching this point.”

(CNN) — It was a fitting end to a remarkable era — Alex Ferguson celebrated his final home game as manager of Manchester United with a dramatic late victory against Swansea on Sunday.

While the result made no difference to either side’s season, the jubilation that followed a rare winner from veteran defender Rio Ferdinand brought echoes from some of the 71-year-old’s long list of triumphs in more than quarter of a century at the helm.

“My retirement doesn’t mean the end of my life at the club. I will be able to enjoy watching them rather than suffering with them,” Ferguson told the crowd in pouring rain at Old Trafford, which included his 11 grandchildren in the stands.

“But if you think about it, those last-minute goals, comebacks, even the defeats, are all part of this great football club of ours. It’s been an unbelievable experience so thank you for that.

“I’d also like to remind you that when we had bad times here the club stood by me, the players stood by me, and your job now is to stand by our new manager. That is important.”

Ferguson’s replacement will be David Moyes, who is leaving United’s English Premier League rivals Everton after more than a decade as manager.

He will begin preparations for United’s title defense when he formally takes over in July, with Ferguson’s legacy being 13 league championships, two European Cups, five FA Cups, four League Cups, one European Cup Winners’ Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup.

This season United regained the EPL crown from bitter rivals Manchester City, securing it with four games to play.

“It has been the most fantastic experience of my life. Thank you,” said Ferguson, the most successful manager in English football.

“I have been very fortunate, I’ve been able to manage some of the greatest players in the country let alone Manchester United.

“All these players here today, they have represented our club the proper way and have won a championship in fantastic fashion. Well done to the players.”

United took the lead six minutes before halftime through striker Javier Hernandez, but Swansea stunned the home fans when Michu volleyed in at the near post just four minutes after the interval for his 18th league goal this season.

If the Spaniard’s effort was a typically predatory strike, Ferdinand’s stunning 87th-minute volley came out of the blue — the former England center-back’s first goal in more than five years.

It also capped a home farewell for 38-year-old midfielder Paul Scholes, who announced on Saturday that he is retiring for the second time and will return to the club’s coaching ranks.

David Moyes: Alex Ferguson's successorDavid Moyes: Alex Ferguson’s successor

“Paul is one of the greatest players this club has ever had and ever will have,” said Ferguson, who brought Scholes into the first team from the youth ranks along with a “golden generation” that included David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville.

“I wish you a great retirement and I know you will still be around annoying me!” added the Scot, who will remain at Old Trafford as a director on the board and as a club ambassador.

One player who didn’t feature in the match was England striker Wayne Rooney, who watched from the stands before joining the celebrations on the pitch.

Ferguson later confirmed that Rooney has asked to leave the club, so he thought it was best to give the 27-year-old time to reflect on his decision.

“I think he wants to think it through in his mind — I think that’s a good idea. We’re not going to let him go,” Ferguson said.

“I think maybe he is a bit frustrated. He has been taken off once or twice in the past couple of weeks.”

Ferguson also revealed that he had made his decision to retire last December because he wanted to spend more time with his wife Cathy, who had recently lost her sister.

The win put United 13 points clear of City ahead of Ferguson’s 1,500th and final United game away to West Brom next Sunday.

City’s season suffered another setback on Saturday with a 1-0 defeat to lowly Wigan in the FA Cup final, which has sparked speculation that manager Roberto Mancini will be sacked.

While City sealed the second of England’s Champions League places last weekend, the other two are still up for grabs.

Tottenham moved above London rivals Arsenal into fourth place with a 2-1 win at Stoke on Sunday, as Emmanuel Adebayor scored the decisive goal with seven minutes to play.

Stoke led early through Steven Nzonzi but Clint Dempsey — who set up Adebayor’s winner — equalized before the home side had Charlie Adam sent off just after halftime.

Arsenal can regain fourth place with victory over Wigan on Tuesday in a match that the third-bottom team needs to win to have any chance of avoiding relegation.

Moyes will leave Everton in sixth place following a 2-0 win over West Ham, with both goals coming from Belgian striker Kevin Mirallas.

Liverpool stayed seventh with a 3-1 win at Fulham as a hat-trick from striker Dean Sturridge meant the London side may need a point in the final round to avoid relegation.

Newcastle and Norwich both won on Sunday to ensure another season in the top flight, respectively beating bottom club Queens Park Rangers 2-1 and eighth-placed West Brom 4-0.

Sunderland could have condemned Wigan to the drop just a day after the club’s biggest success at Wembley, but drew 1-1 with Southampton to stay in the relegation mix.

Club’s mass appeal in Asia

Hong Kong (CNN) — The news that Alex Ferguson is stepping down as Manchester United manager after 26 trophy-laden seasons will be reverberating far beyond British shores Wednesday, and no more so than in Asia where the club has a huge following.

To put this in perspective, a study recently commissioned by the newly-crowned English Premier League champions showed that the team’s global fan base had doubled to 659 million people between 2007 and 2012 — with 325 million fans from Asia alone.

The figures are staggering, though the number of Manchester United shirts — official merchandise or not — that can be seen around the streets of any major city in the region, from Bangkok to Shanghai, goes some way towards illustrating this phenomenal interest.

Ferguson’s retirement ‘a sad day’

Alex Ferguson’s football legacy

Bobby Charlton: Ferguson’s best moment

Will Mourinho replace Ferguson?

And the interest goes beyond simply wearing a replica shirt. Within minutes of the shock announcement, football fans in China flocked to Weibo, the country’s version of Twitter, to lament Ferguson’s departure.

“Farewell Fergie,” posted one netizen, known as @HuxuanzheChuckHoo. “Sir Alex Forever!” declared @Yesmanduomehao.

Another, known as @Drshankui, said: “Although I don’t really like Manchester and their red polo shirts, I have to say Ferguson is one of the most respected coaches. Now that he’s going to retire soon, I felt really sad. I want to thank him for bringing all the splendidness to the team!”

Wednesday’s news also found its way into the mainstream media in China, including 163.com, one of the country’s most popular news platforms.

Lucrative

United has not been slow to recognize the benefits of this global appeal, regularly taking part in lucrative pre-season tours at packed venues across Asia to connect with local fans. In July, the team will visit Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan and Australia.

The club has also signed a number of sponsorship deals with “Asian partners,” including banks in Vietnam and a Japanese social gaming company — though this Asian “sweet spot” has also been clear in the minds of sponsors beyond the region.

READ: United buoyed by sponsorship deals

“We’ve gone from no brand awareness in countries like Japan and South Korea to incredible brand awareness,” Phil Clement, chief marketing officer at Aon, told the Financial Times when explaining the U.S. insurance giant’s decision to put pen to paper on a $23 million sponsorship deal earlier this year.

United even explored the idea of an Asian stock market floatation in either Hong Kong or Singapore last year, as it eyed investors — though market volatility at the time put these plans on hold.

Winning habit

So why is the club so popular in Asia?

The reason is fairly straightforward, according to James Porteous, a sports journalist at the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong.

“The one thing Asian football fans value above anything else is winning, and under Alex Ferguson, Manchester United have simply been one of the most successful clubs in the world. Liverpool have a big following in Asia because of their great history, but that’s taken a dent given their recent trophy-starved years.

“While newer champions such as Chelsea and Manchester City have been on the rise, United have had a consistent record of success under Ferguson, gaining new fans in Asia with every trophy won over the last two decades.

“United’s history also gives them great glamor and prestige, from the great names of the 1960s and the tragedy of the Busby Babes, and that is also attractive to fans in the region. But most of their popularity is down to their triumphs in the last 20 years under Ferguson. Title after title, the Champions League twice, global megastars such as Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo … all these ingredients have made United’s football brand Asia’s best-loved.”

United has also invested wisely in talented Asian players, most recently signing Japan’s brightest talent, Shinji Kagawa. The attacking midfielder follows in the footsteps of South Korean star Park Ji-Sung, who spent seven hugely successful years at the club.

The result is United’s appeal borders on the fanatical at times.

When the club announced plans to play in Hong Kong this year, its first visit to the city since 2005, tickets for the friendly against a local club sold out almost instantly. Porteous said former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was mobbed by fans when he arrived at Hong Kong airport to promote the game, and again by local journalists at a press conference — despite leaving the club in 1999.

“The reception I’ve had in only a couple of hours is incredible,” Schmeichel told journalists at the time.

“No doubt the club’s vast marketing arm will have many plans to maintain this popularity in Asia,” said Porteous. “But the key factor is simple: whoever the new manager is, he’ll have to keep winning trophies.”

(CNN) — David Moyes has been appointed as the new manager of Manchester United after agreeing a six-year deal.

The 50-year-old, who will replace Alex Ferguson on July 1, revealed his desire to leave current club Everton earlier Thursday.

Moyes, who has been in charge at Goodison Park since 2002, will take charge of the club’s final two Premier League games of the season before making the move to Old Trafford.

“It’s a great honor to be asked to be the next manager of Manchester United,” Moyes told United’s official website.

Ferguson’s retirement ‘a sad day’

Bobby Charlton: Ferguson’s best moment

“I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the football club.

“I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn’t something that comes around very often and I’m really looking forward to taking up the post next season.

“I have had a terrific job at Everton, with a tremendous chairman and Board of Directors and a great set of players.

“Between now and the end of the season, I will do everything in my power to make sure we finish as high as possible in the table.

“Everton’s fantastic fans have played a big part in making my years at Goodison so enjoyable and I thank them wholeheartedly for the support they have given me and the players. Everton will be close to me for the rest of my life.”

Moyes has been publicly endorsed by Ferguson, who says his fellow Scot is the perfect man to take over at the helm.

“When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David Moyes,” Ferguson told the club’s official website.

“David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. I’ve admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of Assistant Manager here.

“He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton.

How to manage like Alex Ferguson

“There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this Club.”

Moyes told Everton chairman Bill Kenwright of his desire to join Manchester United and succeed Ferguson on Wednesday.

Moyes has never won a major trophy with Everton after more than a decade in the English top flight, but has consistently produced competitive teams on a tight budget.

The Liverpool-based side has finished outside the Premier League’s top-10 only three times since he took over in 2002, and qualified for the European Champions League in 2005.

“Everton can confirm that David Moyes will leave the Club at the end of the season,” the Merseyside club said in a statement.

“The manager met chairman Bill Kenwright on Wednesday May 8 and confirmed his desire to join Manchester United.”

The statement added: “The chairman, on behalf of the club, would like to place on record his thanks to David for the massive contribution he has made to Everton since his arrival in March 2002. He has been an outstanding manager.

Moyes took charge of Everton on over 500 occasions with the club qualifying for Europe four times during his time as manager.

His final two games as Everton manager will be against West Ham United and Chelsea.

“Everton officials will start the search for a replacement manager immediately,” added the Everton statement.

Everton’s Belgian international Marouane Fellaini ‏tweeted: “Many Thanks Coach.”

Moyes will now be in charge of a club that under Ferguson twice won Europe’s top competition and lifted the English championship 13 times following the 71-year-old’s arrival in 1986.

United is one of the world’s biggest sporting brands, worth a reported $3.17 billion, with a fan base of more than 650 million worldwide.

Moyes arrives with United having sealed a series of lucrative sponsorship deals aimed at maximizing off-pitch revenue in order to be competitive under European football’s financial fair play rules.

The club has been repaying large amounts of debt since it was bought by the American Glazer family in a highly leveraged £800 million ($1.25 billion) takeover in 2005.

This month United reported record third-quarter earnings of £91.7 million ($142 million) but an 18% increase in operating expenses plus payments on a gross debt that has fallen to £367.6 million ($572 million) meant a pre-tax loss of £3.15 million ($4.9 million) for the period.

Whether Moyes will be given significant funds to strengthen the squad for United’s EPL title defense remains to be seen — Borussia Dortmund’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but the Poland striker would command a hefty fee and wage packet.

United did not have to pay Everton compensation for Moyes, as his contract had been due to expire in July.

Moyes may need to find a replacement for Wayne Rooney, who has told the club he wants to leave according to British reports Thursday — but United said he is not for sale.

Moyes gave Rooney his debut as a 16-year-old at Everton but they fell out when the England striker left for Old Trafford in 2004. Moyes later sued the player and his publisher over remarks made in his autobiography, but they settled out of court.

Rooney handed in a transfer request in late 2010, but was persuaded to stay by Ferguson and rewarded with a lucrative new contract that still has two years to run.
